In Seberg, Kristen Stewart gives a fully-inhabited, body-and-soul performance as a Hollywood casualty pushed beyond the limit. Its such a stellar turn that she almost redeems this well-meaning but wobbly biopic — which earns points for trying to do her justice. Someone needed to. In playing Jean Seberg, Stewart embodies the question at the core of the film: How does a college girl from Marshalltown, Iowa — who was plucked from obscurity in 1957 to play Joan of Arc in a major motion picture — end up dead in Paris 22 years later, her body found decomposing in her car with a bottle of pills by her side? It wasnt a failed love affair or the studio system that discovered, exploited, and discarded her that killed Seberg. It was politics. And this impassioned film, directed by Benedict Andrews from a stumbling, overwrought script by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel, is determined to detail the hows and whys. All credit to Stewart for portraying Seberg not as a fragile flower, but a tough, thoughtful, vital woman who was brought down by an FBI, headed by J. Edgar Hoover, determined to destroy her for her political beliefs. By 1968, when the film picks up and really commits to her story, Seberg has moved past the trauma of the past decade when critics burned her at the stake for her performance in Saint Joan. Her Svengali director Otto Preminger cast her again in 1958s Bonjour Tristesse and, though her performance remains a career highlight, the public wasnt impressed. It was only in 1960 when French firebrand Jean-Luc Godard gave her the role of an American girl in Paris in his New Wave classic Breathless that Seberg — with her pixie cut, black capri pants, and air of inscrutability — won respect as an actress and a fashion icon. Paris also became her home, the place where she settled with her second husband, novelist Romain Gary (Yvan Attal) and their son, Diego. The film brushes past these details, saving its focus for Sebergs first contact with the Black Panthers in the person of Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie) a radical activist she meets in Los Angeles. Her financial contributions to civil-rights causes, her practice of flashing the Black Power salute in public and her affair with the married Jamal create a lightning bolt of controversy that enrages Hollywood and the FBI. Hoover assigns agent Jack Solomon (Jack OConnell) and his partner Carl Kowalski (Vince Vaughn) to rain down a storm of bad publicity on Seberg that amounts to a public shaming. Her homes are bugged, she is subjected to aggressive wiretaps, and surveillance. Later, when Seberg becomes pregnant by Mexican student Carlos Navarra, the bureau knowingly disseminates the false information that the baby, who died two days after her birth, was black. Her relationships in tatters, her career on the skids, and her depression leading to suicide attempts, Seberg is reduced to a shadow of her former self. What we see in this film — shot with a keen eye for period details that define character by the great Rachel Morrison ( Black Panther) — is nothing less than the feds ordering the systematic destruction of an innocent human being. Why? To neutralize an actress who dared to live her life as she saw fit. And its here that Stewart builds her performance to a crescendo of feeling and potent provocation. Even when the film fails to assemble its moments into a coherent whole, Stewart reminds us of Sebergs once vibrant strength and defiance and stands up for her truth.

Kind of a side note, but I feel like a lot of what made that series cathartic was how it connected to Bush-era cultural themes of fear, political animosity, isolationism, and hyper-patriotism. Not sure the comic to screen adaption will be as poignant now in 2020 when our society has moved on to new cultural themes in America. You lose that catharsis in the bottle effect. When the plane is being de-boarded, she follows Jamal where hes posing with other members of the party doing the Black Power sign, and Seberg joins in too. Detective Jack Soloman of the FBI is put on the case immediately when Seberg lands at the airport. From there, Jack and his partner, Carl Kowalski, are watching and listening to her every move. After posing together at the airport, a relationship forms between Seberg and Jamal. The two become romantically involved. This eventually backfires on them because theyre both cheating on their spouses. The FBI continues to watch the two of them and even breaks into Sebergs house to bug it, so theyre able to listen to her phone conversations. The FBI finds out Seberg is also involved with the radical Black Panther Party, and she becomes a main target of the FBIs surveillance of the Black Panthers and the Black Power movement. When the FBI catches wind of Seberg and Jamals affair, they anonymously call Jamals wife to tip her off about it. When they dont see the affair ending, the FBI releases a graphic cartoon of Seberg and Jamal, which leads to Jamal ending his involvement with her. Seberg becomes distraught when the affair ends, but continues to travel to make movies. When shes in Mexico filming, she becomes pregnant. The FBI finds out because of their wiretapping. When she starts to show, they spread a false media report that shes having a Black Panther leaders baby. Jean knows the man isnt the father of her baby. However, the stress of the media publicity causes Jean to begin taking medication. This leads to the babys premature birth. Jean loses her daughter two days after the birth and blames the media for it. Shortly after her babys death, Jean tries to commit suicide by taking a whole bottle of prescription medication. Her attempt fails, and shes thrown back into her everyday life. Jean is seen having mental breakdowns as she believes the government is watching and listening to her but has no solid proof. When Jack, the lead FBI agent handling Jeans case, hears of the attempted suicides and the breakdowns Jean is having, he heads to the FBIs Los Angeles headquarters to try and make sense of it. When he cant, he gathers her file. He intends to go to Paris to meet Jean unannounced, but will he come clean and show her everything the FBI has on her? SEBERG tells the story of actress Jean Seberg and her connection to the Black Power movement, including the Black Panther Party. She was the main target of the FBIs COINTELPRO program, a counter-intel program against leftist radicals that tracked, watched and listened Jeans every move. Theres very little positive content in SEBERG to commend it. Although the FBI clearly went overboard and harassed and slandered Jean Seberg, the movie seems to whitewash the character of Jean Seberg to support the movies view of Seberg as a big political martyr. That said, it should be noted that her second husband said after her death that Seberg tried to commit suicide on every anniversary of her babys death.

Hounded and scrutinized, her life starts to fall apart, and Solomon's conscience starts to bother him. Can he undo the damage that's been done? Is it any good? Once it becomes clear that this biopic is really only half about Jean Seberg, then it starts to work in its own fascinating, tragic way, driven by Stewart's fierce, fervent lead performance. Yet the movie also captures her humanity, the way she carries her many burdens, and it's possible to empathize with her. O'Connell is the movie's other main character, a reader of Captain America comics who's married to med student Linette ( Margaret Qualley) with whom he's unable to talk to about his top-secret work. He's likewise an engaging soul, and the eventual meeting between him and Seberg is a necessary coda. Despite some overblown moments and simplistic shortcuts, the movie looks great, with fine cinematography by Black Panther 's Rachel Morrison that emphasizes a trapped feel even within the open spaces of Los Angeles. And director Andrews allows even the supporting characters to come to life; Qualley is especially good, as is Zazie Beetz as Hakim Jamal's wounded wife. She simply doesn't measure up to the character she is trying to play. She probably did well in the Twilight movies because she really has "dead eyes. They had one son, Alexandre Diego Gary. They too divorced after two years. She was later romantically involved with Carlos Ornelas Navarra, a student revolutionary. She gave birth to his daughter on 23rd August 1970. However, the baby died after two days. Her third marriage took place in 1972 with American actor and filmmaker Dennis Berry. However, the couple separated later and she became involved with a man named Ahmed Hasni. She had provided financial aid to several civil rights groups, including the Black Panther Party, a revolutionary socialist group. This triggered the FBI to strongly suspect her and start a defamation campaign against her. They created several fake stories to harass and defame her, which could have possibly led to her suicide. Death Jean Seberg mysteriously disappeared on the night of 30 August 1979. Her decomposing body was found after nine days in her car, wrapped in a blanket. The police also found a bottle of barbiturates and an empty mineral water bottle along with a suicide note. Though her death was ruled as a probable suicide, the police suspected several people of having a hand in her death. Her second husband called a press conference shortly after where he blamed the FBI campaign against her for her suicide as her mental health had completely deteriorated following the campaign. Instead, Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnels script spends too much time observing Sebergs fictional and ultimately conscience-stricken nemesis, the F. Agent Jack Solomon (Jack OConnell) whose spying and harassment will send her into emotional free-fall. Despite its wearying preoccupation with Bureau mischief and Solomons softening toward his target, “Seberg” has an old-fashioned glamour that can on occasion take your breath away. The styling and production design are impeccable, and Rachel Morrisons radiant cinematography is as beguiling as Stewarts performance. Glowing beneath Sebergs famous blond pixie cut, confident yet fragile, shes a picture of gorgeous disintegration. Andrews might have diluted her point of view and blurred his films focus, but when his star has his undivided attention, he knows how to set up a scene. Watch her pace nervously in her fishbowl of a house, dressed in a silk peignoir and clutching a drink, an irresistible target for anyone with a mind to stalk or photograph. Late in the movie, theres one long, perfect shot — a rapturous synchronicity of sound and vision — where we see Seberg walk toward the camera on her husbands arm while Scott Walkers “Its Raining Today” croons prophetically on the soundtrack. The song mourns a lover whos already the fading memory that Seberg will become, and it seems to be saying we should have watched her more closely while we still could.
